چکیده
Tung-Yung Fan, Jan-Jung Li, Sheng-Xian Ie and Lee-Shing Fang (2002) Lunar periodicity of larval release by pocilloporid corals in southern Taiwan. Zoological Studies 41(3): 288-294. Lunar patterns of larval release by 3 brooding corals, Seriatopora hystrix, Pocillopora damicornis, and Stylophora pistillata, in southern Taiwan were investigated. Corals were collected and maintained in outdoor, flow-through systems to quantify nightly release of larvae. Planulation of S. hystrix and P. damicornis revealed a well-defined lunar pattern with planulae being released during the new moon and 1st quarter. Planulation of S. pistillata occurred throughout the lunar phase, but more planulae were released in the 2nd-quarter moon phase. It is likely that the lunar periodicity in planulation of the 3 pocilloporid coral species is a result of lunar periodicity in gamete and larval development. Larvae of S. hystrix and S. pistillata released later had higher rates of settlement within 24 h on plastic petri dishes. Based on the reproduction and settlement information available, it would be practical to obtain a large number of competent planulae, seed them on suitable substrata, and then transfer them to reefs for restoring damaged coral populations and communities. http://www.sinica.edu.tw/zool/zoolstud/41.3/288.pdf

Elevated Temperature Alters the Lunar Timing of Planulation in the Brooding Coral Pocillopora damicornis
Reproductive timing in corals is associated with environmental variables including temperature, lunar periodicity, and seasonality. Although it is clear that these variables are interrelated, it remains unknown if one variable in particular acts as the proximate signaler for gamete and or larval release. Furthermore, in an era of global warming, the degree to which increases in ocean temperatur...
متن کاملBathymetric Variation in Recruitment and Relative Importance of Pre- and Post-Settlement Processes in Coral Assemblages at Lyudao (Green Island), Taiwan
Studies on coral communities have typically been conducted in shallow waters (∼5 m). However, in the face of climate change, and as shallow coral communities become degraded, a greater understanding of deeper coral communities is needed as they become the main reef remnants, playing a central role in the future of coral reefs. To understand the dynamics of deeper coral assemblages, the recruitm...
متن کاملHourglass Mechanism with Temperature Compensation in the Diel Periodicity of Planulation of the Coral, Seriatopora hystrix
Brooding corals often exhibit daily planulation peaks in certain phases of lunar months during their reproductive season. The mechanism controlling this diurnal phenomenon, however, remains uncertain. Seriatopora hystrix populations of Southern Taiwan exhibit a highly synchronized planulation rhythm characterized by pre-dawn peak release episodes over a period of 4-6 days per month throughout t...
متن کاملLunar rhythms in the deep sea: evidence from the reproductive periodicity of several marine invertebrates.
While lunar rhythms are commonly documented in plants and animals living in terrestrial and shallow-water environments, deep-sea organisms have essentially been overlooked in that respect. This report describes evidence of lunar periodicity in the reproduction of 6 deep-sea species belonging to 2 phyla. Occurrences of gamete release in free spawners and larval release in brooders exhibited sign...
متن کاملReproductive biology of the deep brooding coral Seriatopora hystrix: Implications for shallow reef recovery
Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs, between 30 and 150 m depth) are hypothesized to contribute to the recovery of degraded shallow reefs through sexually produced larvae (referred to as Deep Reef Refuge Hypothesis). In Okinawa, Japan, the brooder coral Seriatopora hystrix was reported to be locally extinct in a shallow reef while it was found abundant at a MCE nearby. In this context, S. hystrix...
